ATTN: Former Athletes... GAME OVER!

As athletes no matter the sport we play, there is one thing that we can pretty much agree on and that is, we are one play away from being done with the game. Hence the phrase " GAME OVER"!

Most athletes have never left the game the exact way they have pictured and when it's over, they will have to face a serious adjustment period, transitioning from the game to what's next in life.

Many of us may go back to school to finish our degree, some of us will get a 9 to 5 job or a few of us will start our own business. Whatever we decide about the next phase of life, most likely the next phase is not as exciting as playing the game you was passionate about and enjoyed.

NOW THAT THE GAME IS OVER, ARE YOU...

Athletes whether you played Collegiate or Pro ball too often get hurt, expire eligibility or "get fired” from the game before it's time and we have to face an adjustment period and possibly a huge transition.

We are often left in unfamiliar and uncomfortable territory and it can happen so fast ie... not just on any given Sunday, or any given Saturday but even on any given practice.

No matter what sport we play, there's always a possibility of getting injured, losing our scholarship or simple getting caught up in the politics of sports and allow discouragement to set in and we lose the passion for the game.

For me, I was blessed to get a "full ride" scholarship to play college football and then, go on to play Professional football for 2 years until I suffered a career ending leg injury. When that injury happened, I found myself replaying the game over and over and what, if anything I could have done differently.

I remember receiving so many phone calls and voice messages from teammates, family and friends, with so many encouraging words of overcoming the injury and getting back on the field in due time.

After months and months of physical therapy sessions, I did make it back to the point of where I could run routes and even had a few tryouts for teams to play again, however deep down I knew my playing days were pretty much over.

I just didn't feel as sure and as confident in my leg holding up for full contact. You know as well as I know that in the world of high intense competition, you need to be ready at a high level to compete day in and day out.

I was one of the few lucky ones to have that opportunity to extend my playing career a little longer after college and make some money from the game.

Now here I am caught up in this time period where my football career is over and not really knowing what to do next. I needed to figure it out pretty quick because I was only in the league for a hot minute and didn’t earn the “Big Money” to float me for a time period until the next opportunity showed up.

As athletes, we are used to having structure in our lives with practicing at certain times and having someone like our coaches and teammates in place to hold us accountable. Trust me, with no structure or purpose, life can go downhill very fast.

Many athletes don't finish their degree plan and often find themselves back at home with their parents looking for a job or just kinda floating along going through the motions with no purpose or structure to follow.

On one hand, you'll find yourself back at home in familiar surroundings of with many of the people you grew up with, reliving those athletic exploits that you was just experiencing a short time ago.

Yes I know how it feels and I also know that this will get old and played out. After awhile of this reliving those "Golden Days", you get to a point where you don't want to talk about the game nor have any real desire to watch it being played on television or anywhere else.

To give you some consolation and help you sort things out, there are alot of good things you could be doing back at home with the game you love. You could start by going back to your high school and community organizations to share the lessons and strategies to the younger athletes and assist in guiding them the right way.

But again, I get it! You maybe stuck in your own head, and you just can't put yourself in that place yet. You still feel deep down that you should still be playing however since you are not playing, what good is it for me to be out here talking about the game.

The most challenging part of being out of the game and trying to figure the next thing to do. It's a very rare find to start another career with the same passion you had for the game that you played however getting off the couch, networking and researching opportunities that can spark an interest into what you may like to do is a great start.

This is what this Playbook is designed to do. It is writtten in a way to simply get you to think about things you are good in and have a talent for and then find an online platform for you to start in.

In Summary

To fast forward on to what was next for me, I went back to my parents home and stayed there for a few months to figure things out. I got off the couch, got my license in Insurance, then what the heck, got back enrolled in school again to finish up those last 13 hours for my Marketing degree.

After working in the insurance industry for over 14 years, owning a moving company for 6 years, I am now President of Action Online Marketing, LLC and working and partnering with individual creating several online businesses and earning residual income for time and financial freedom.
